Secondary 1 Orientation

Dear all

It's the part of the year when I look forward to HLC putting up a GREAT show and welcome our new Hougean into our family. It's also the part of the year that I get worried if you have NOT firm up certain duties, events and procedure. Planning a MAJOR event like this does not just happen. It require ALOT of committment and thoughts put into it to make the Orientation a success. Yi Sin (Chairperson Orientation 2010) had requested the trial run to be after X'mas which I am fine with BUT the following must be done before that :-

1) The allocation of duties (WHO)

Who is in charge of the individual events? (Do they know what they need to prepare?)
Who are the facil in the classes?
Who will get ready the logistics required for all the activities?

2) Logistics (WHAT)

What do you need for the events?
What need to be brought or borrowed from the school?(Walkie Talkie? Sport Eq?)

3) Timing (WHEN)

When will the events start? (Is timing enough? Do we need a trial run to confirm timing?)

4) Venue (WHERE)

Where are the events held? (Did we get permission for it?)

5) Objectives (WHY)

Why are certain events organised? (What are the objectives? Bonding, knowing the school better?)

6) Procedure for events (HOW)

Is there a write-out for each event so that every1 know what is it about?

Every year I ask such questions to help the organising com prepare themselves for MOST major event in the HLC calendar and those who had organise it THIS year (Wayne, Cai Jun, etc etc) might be able to offer some feedback. Let work hard from NOW onwards to a GREAT opening for ourselves and the New Hougean. It's only slightly more than TWO weeks away..........

Teachers' Day Concert

I am very proud that HLC managed to put up a fun and enjoyable concert! Principal, Vice-Principals and teachers were very pleased with HLC's organisation. Kudos to the organising committee. Also not forgetting the other HLCs who help out. It is a big project and I am sure the junior had seen what the seniors are capable of. Next year will be your turn!

Congratulations We Set A Record In Singapore!

Hi HLC Members,

I am very proud that HLC Made the Difference. We contributed to the 45426 lucky stars that our students had folded. Without our HLC members and other helpful students rushing like mad, straining our hand muscles to cut the strips of coloured papers, painstakingly putting the strips into packages, we wouldn't be able to set that record. I am proud that every HLC member helped each other to make this event a success.

Of course there were hiccups. I hope that we can learn from the mistakes. Nonetheless, there were also some HLC members who won praises from the teacher in charge.

Kudos to all the HLC members who had helped out and a BIG THANK YOU to all who Made the Difference!

Hang On There!

Hi HLC and upcoming members,

In view of the current H1N1 situation, we are not able to carry any training for the moment. However, we still have a few school events, e.g. Racial Harmony Day, National Day, Teachers' Day Concert, ACES Day, etc, coming up which need your expertises. I am sure each and every member will help each other out to show HLC's capabilities!

Winsome and Pei Ling will be posting the groupings for the events. So keep a lookout at our blog for more details. Stay tuned!

International Friendship Day 2009

Chain of Friendship by HLC on 17th April 2009

Thank you Cai Jun and Yi Lin for the taking charge of the Chain of Friendship! They spent quite a long time cutting, collecting and pasting together the rings back from every class. It was not an easy job. Also not forgetting the rest of the members who helped holding the chain during the concert!

Our Principal's Heartbeat for HS

I would like to share our Principal, Mr Ng's heartbeat for HS:

Apart from learning important lifeskills, we want our students to develop independence and move away from self-centredness so as to serve others. To achieve this, we will adopt the two frameworks that are strategic in developing Hougeans to be responsible citizens - Service Learning and Servant Leadership.

Service Learning is an approach where students not only serve the community through the Community Involvement Programmes, but also learn to identify with the needs of the community and to reflect on their own experience in working with the community. Similarly, Servant Leadership will be one of the best ways for students to learn to care not just for themselves but also for others. Albert Einstein once said, “Only a life lived in service of others is worth living.” A spirit of service brings about a sense of compassion and a desire to achieve greatness beyond oneself.

Think

We are the leaders of our school. If we cant even set a right example, how are we going to lead our school? Get this straight people, we are CHOSEN to lead the school. The HLC was not established for nothing.

To some of you, i just want to say thanks for participating in all the events. I have noticed that there are still a lot more people missing during these events. Why is that so? Busy? Well so am i, i went through what all of you are going though right now. Busy with this and that etc. In fact, i am still going though it. I understand many of you have your own priorities ( CCA, Studies etc.), so do I. It's about how you prioritize your time. I'm not sure how important serving and leading the school is to all of you. Well, it sure means a lot to me...All i want to see is more people stepping up, whether it is organizing events or just participating. That's the very least that i ask from you, my fellow leaders. And even after that, there's so much more we can do to improve our school. Need to see some suggestions? Well, you guys should go visit the school portal (i have no idea how many of you do). Check out the forum, there are many concerns that we as leaders can put forth to the school. As i said earlier, we are the leaders of our school, we have to be the voice for the student body.

I really hope that during the next HLC camp, you will not only learn new things but also apply to your life. Through experience, many people come out from camps as if they learnt nothing. Even if they did learn something, no one can see the difference it has made. Because so few people actually apply what they learn during these camps and workshops. To tell you the truth, i was like that, until i realized i should use what i've learnt instead of just erasing it from my mind.

This council is not for you to just come in and do a little something and earn your CCA points. Until you realize that there's more to it than that, you are wasting your time. If you really can't realize that, i've got nothing to say... Search yourselves and reflect.

If you disagree with what i wrote, please feel free to approach me. Don't keep it inside you, just tell me. I'll be glad if you have something to say, whether you disagree or not.

Thank you!

Firstly I would like to thank both the Alumni and the existing student leaders that had helped out during this year Sec 1 Orientation programme. It was an ambitious “gamble” on my part to let you, the students run the entire orientation. I thought the most effective way for you to learn is by doing it yourself. Nothing could replace the experience you had gained through these 4 days of organizing the events and interacting with your juniors.

You had found that controlling a group of 10 students is very tough especially when they don’t listen to your instructions. You felt very frustrated and sometimes helpless. Have you ever wonder you could behave similarly in your class towards your teachers?
If you don’t like to be treated like that then maybe you should reflect on your own behaviour.

I very very glad that all of you had gained many valuable experiences through the one plus month of planning and execution. I am sure you had become a better leader but as Weiqing mentioned, there are always room for improvement.

Do continue to improve yourself and the environment we are in to make HS a better place for all.

I’m proud of all of you.

Sec 1 Orientation is finally here.

Dear Leaders,

The day you have been waiting for is finally here! Let put in our best effort to make it a success.

Just afew reminders,

1) Report to school early (~7:15AM) to help usher the Sec 1 to the Hall for morning assembly. The Prefects and the HLC will work hand in hand in ensuring the students are sitted before the bell ring.

2) Do have self-awareness about you grooming. It is understandable that your hair might be abit long during the holiday BUT please maintain the standard that a student leader should have.

3) For Day 1 you follow your class back to have a session with your form teacher till 9:00am after which i need you at the hall for ice-breaking and the teaching of the school song till 10:15am. School will be dismiss at 12:10pm for everyone.

4) Collect your nametag from me on Monday and wear it prominately so that the sec 1 get to know you by name.

5) Be the perfect role model cos the Sec 1 will model you in your behaviour.

All the best

Edwin
